Technology plays a major role in adolescent development and wellbeing in complex ways.

  • Cellular and digital technologies can aid social support, connecting with communities of identity, access to health information, and relatively low-cost approaches for health promoting interventions including texting and game-based apps.
  • However, they can also be linked with experiences that undermine healthy development, such as cyber-bullying, reduced sleep, or interpersonal isolation due to extensive gaming or use of other technologies.

I4Y is committed to:

  • focusing on the impact of technology on adolescents’ lives
  • drawing on key theoretical principles and the empirical literature to guide how new technologies can be used to advance adolescent health and wellbeing in our rapidly changing world
  • to synergize the work of UC faculty engaged in diverse efforts that engage technology with adolescents
